SAM ROSE IN THE SHADOWS
is the children's puppet theatre company Tucked In’s new play about what it is like to be sad and how one can learn to be happy again.
Ivan Rose is a six-year-old boy. Shut away in his little house in the city under the watchful eye of his aging tutor, Greta Hollow, he fantasises about the outside world, which he knows nothing about. His father spends most of his time away, and Ivan can only imagine he is off fighting dragons and generally being a hero!
Yet one day Ivan decides to break free of the confines of his little house and searches through the vast city to find out what his heroic father, Sam Rose, really does all day. When he finds Sam Rose he is dismayed. Instead of a hero he sees a hunched, sad man carrying a heavy box through the cracked, grey streets of the city. He is on a quest to unlock his box of sorrows and free himself from his sadness.
We would like everyone to take ownership of the production.
We are developing the production with the assistance of the brilliant children from William Davies and Arnhem Wharf Primary Schools in Tower Hamlets, London. We won't make a move without the approval of the children, they are the chiefs.
And to say a big thank you to the children, we in return are going to be developing their own stories, puppets and magic and the icing on the cake, they will be our VIP guests at the premiere at the amazing Rich Mix in London.
Sam Rose will then tour across theatres in London and the UK, including performing to schools and children's wards in hospital in March and then again in the Autumn of 2012. We will be visiting, Poole, Bristol, Oxford, Leeds, London,Brighton, Edinburgh.. more to come...
You can jump on board here to have a rummage, we'll also keep you informed of new venues
Tucked In creates accessible, inspiring theatrical experiences for a universal audience. Using an inventive style of storytelling that incorporates puppetry, visual theatre and original music.
We tell new stories, encourage learning, creativity and emotional development in young and slightly older people.
The adventure all began with Hal Chambers in 2005 by the sea in Brighton. Hal also directs grown up theatre, he is currently assistant directing at the very posh Donmar Warehouse in London
Tucked In produced a number of shows locally, including Radio by Al Smith, for which they won an Argus Angel Award for Excellence at the Brighton Fringe in 2007. Jackajack was Tucked In Productions’ first show specifically aimed at a family audience and premiered at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2007. The show was then selected to be performed at the prestigious National Student Drama Festival in 2008 and subsequently toured the UK in 2009, gaining sell-out audiences and five star reviews.
In 2010, Tucked In created their most successful tour to date, Tim and Light, which toured the UK in 2011, premiering at the Lyric Hammersmith. Approximately, 3650 people have seen Tim and Light to date. It visited prestigious venues and festivals, such as Glastonbury Festival, the Lowry, Latitude Festival, The Egg (Theatre Royal Bath) and The Tricycle, and gained 5 star reviews and critical acclaim.
Tucked In's trademark style is defined by Beatrice Pentney's haunting puppets. See www.beatricepentney.com to gain an insight into her incredible world...
The company for Sam Rose are:

Gemma Lloyd - Producer

We are all massively over-excited by Sam Rose in the Shadows, think Neil Gaiman for children and grown ups alike... I promise you, everyone is going to love it.
And we are asking for your help.
We are looking for small pledges, which will make all the difference to us. It will go to assisting in supporting the creation of the actual puppets to be used in Sam Rose as well as the materials we will take with us to all the schools we visit to encourage the children to make their own. Lots of shiny paper, sticky back plastic, wooden spoons and lots of wool and googly eyes.
The secret boss lady also needs to keep the actors fed and watered... She has applied for an Arts Council grant and is contacting other trusts and charities as well as uitilsing the income from the theatres but needs a tiny bit more to keep creating the magic.
Thank you, so, so much, you'll have lots of love from many children, grown ups and puppets alike.
And we have a 5 star review.... so look what you have helped us to achieve..
Spellbinding Storytelling for All Ages (Beth Eyre, Remotgoat).
"Tucked In's new production is a stunning piece of original storytelling - making use of beautifully crafted puppets, haunting original music and an extremely dedicated cast. Hal Chamber's heart-warming new story has been developed in workshops with primary school children and is aimed at a young audience but this charming production will enchant all ages.
Ivan Rose is Sam's adventurous six-year old son. He dreams about exploring and longs to be allowed to join his father outside in the city, instead of being stuck indoors. Ivan imagines that his father spends his day fighting dragons and has no idea of the less impressive truth: Sam has lost his job and his friends and wonders the streets weighed down by his sad things boxed, which is crammed with memories of his past. When he does manage to break free from his confines, Ivan's enthusiasm for life gradually starts to rub off on Sam. This is outstanding children's theatre - the lessons are never heavy handed or patronising, rather Tucked In instruct by delighting. Along the way Ivan and Sam have to confront the creepy whispering shadows and the sinister Keeper of the Keys, by the end they discover that although there are few quick-fix solutions in life, a problem shared can be a problem halved.
As with Tucked In's previous productions for families - Jackajack and Tim & Light, Sam Rose in the Shadows is bursting with remarkable creativity and sensitivity to detail. The masks and puppets are spellbinding and beautifully animated. During Ivan and Sam's magical journey through the city, glittery showers of rain fall, and Ivan is baffled by a world of underground trains and busy commuters - it is all shown through a child's eyes- birds come and pick Ivan up and sweep him round the city and he shows Sam the fun of jumping in puddles and that umbrellas can lift you off the ground.
The company who animate and voice the puppets and become an array of other characters show wonderful focus and energy throughout the show. Sam Rose in the Shadows is utterly accessible, poignant, intelligent, heartfelt and uplifting. I cannot recommend it highly enough."
Hope all's well with everyone.. Just to let you know that the two schools we developed the show with are comng to watch the end results at Rich Mix this Friday and on Saturday we have two public showings.
As you know, if you amazingly pledged £100 and over then you'll be offered a free ticket to the show on Saturday at Rich Mix. 11.00am and 2.00pm.
Do let me know which one you would like to come along to..
And I'll let you know what our mentors thought about their creation very soon...
We've done it.... we've reached our target... whow whee.
Thank you, so, so much to everyone.
We can now put Hal the director out to do even more incredible work....... a very inspiring gentleman who is on the level with everyone he works with.
Thanks so much again, every penny is going into this incredible show so we can keep sharing the magic of puppets with the world.
Although Sam looks a bit gloomy at the moment, he is very happy by the end of the show, I promise... and he says a heartfelt thanks to all of you 30 amazing backers that are enabling his dreams to come true.
And very quickly, we have a new 'uploading' facility on the website so anyone that has seen Sam Rose can share images of their own puppets and drawings with the world.
Have a look here, David is from Perth and we're his biggest fans. We met him last year when our previous show Tim and Light came to Edinburgh.
And introducing some of David's many skills.
So straight of thank you so, so much for all your incredibly generous support, we're really over the moon.
As you know we have until tomorrow evening (Tuesday 28th February) to seek out the remaining amount.. it currently stands at £804.00. If we don't reach this target we don't get to retain any of your pledges. So I am 'on it'....
Winning the prize of £750.00 through 'Please Fund Us' has of course given us a massive boost. This was said of the project....
"This project has “great experience and expertise in the team” according to our judges.
Tim the puppet’s campaign to tell the story of Sam Rose In The Shadows is now even closer to being told. Similar to Mission: Explore Food, this project has only a week left of campaigning, but we’re confident that their target can be reached.
CONGRATULATIONS to Gemma and all at Tucked In!"
So thank you again to PleaseFund Us.
I would also like to intoduce you to the show's new website. http://www.samroseintheshadows.co.uk/
You'll soon see why I will do anything to enable Tucked IN and all the children we are working with to develop the production.
So once again... THANK YOU SO MUCH and superb that you've become part of our adventure.
Hope to see/meet you all soon.
Toby and Dani Davies
