our goals

Build a 3-storey school of the future. It's designed with the community, eco-friendly, child-friendly, disaster-resilient, and REPLICABLE ALL OVER URBAN HAITI

Increase the capacity of Centre Rosalie Javouhey primary school by 580 students

Create a multi-functional community hub to spur learning and economic growth in one of Port-au-Prince’s most disadvantaged communities.

Take a stand against reactive, quick-fix disaster response, by promoting investment in thinking development projects. Here are our 6 design principles:

Raise £40,000 through this campaign to make our 1-year funding plan work

Support Haitian women and girls to plan their own better future

our story

On January 12th 2010, one of the deadliest earthquakes in human history hit Haiti and brought the already vulnerable country to its knees. One of the country’s largest educators of women, the Sisters of St. Joseph of Cluny, were among the many groups affected that day. They lost massively: 10 schools, a teacher training college, an orphanage, a medical centre and much of their own accommodation. Unable to face such an unprecedented disaster alone, they activated their international networks, calling for support from all over the world. And all the way over in Dublin and London, a group of us responded.

HAITIAN CONTEXT

In January 2010 a magnitude 7 earthquake hit near Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince, devastating the city and nearby areas. Thousands of schools, medical centres and houses were destroyed, and hundreds of thousands of people displaced. The estimated death toll ranges from 220,000 to 316,000.

4000 schools were destroyed. The country already lacked thousands of school places, and now the population is booming, with 40% under the age of 18.

The Sisters of St. Joseph of Cluny were one of the many groups affected by the disaster. One of the largest educators of women in Haiti, they lost schools, teacher training facilities, an orphanage, medical centres and more. Unable to face such an unprecedented disaster alone, the sisters activated their international networks, calling for support from all over the world.

In London a small group of us responded. We thought we could connect them with our skills and networks, and help them to plan something that would leave a lasting impact. So we started planning with the sisters to do a different kind of collaborative project, and Thinking Development was born.

The Project

Their top reconstruction priority was Centre Rosalie Javouhey, a complex of girls’ primary schools that should accommodate over 1,250 girls from the densely populated slums of Fort National and St. Antoine, Port-au-Prince. Currently only 800 can attend, and over half of these are in dangerous or temporary classrooms.

At Present, school admissions are partially suspended, as there are not enough classrooms, toilets, kitchen facilities, or play spaces to accommodate the demand. There is no clean drinking water, and limited toilet water means that toilets smell bad. Moreover, the prevalence of low-capacity temporary buildings (1 of which we deem to be unsafe), means there's no more space to expand outwards - only upwards.

Our challenge, therefore, is to drastically increase the site’s capacity, while preserving nature and play space and allowing classes to continue during construction.

The Design

After working with the sisters, teachers, students, and others at Centre Rosalie, after getting advice from our peers in Haiti and abroad, and after carrying out technical tests on site, we came up with a phased masterplan for reconstruction. It’s designed to meet the needs of the local community for the long term, and to meet these needs in a way that supports Haiti’s wider sustainable development.

The masterplan is based on a simple, easily replicable classroom module. By using this regular and symmetrical module as the basis for all parts of the masterplan, we ensure that local construction workers improve their skills through repetition. Moreover, replicating a module within the site and elsewhere in urban Haiti allows for performance improvements and reduced costs with each replication.

In this campaign, we’re raising money to build the first 12 classrooms. You can find more information about our design principles, the design process, and design itself on our website. You’ll also find a complete overview of the design in our book (see below issue preview).

Who's working on the project?

Learn more about our 100% voluntary team of engineers, architects, development planners, communicators, teachers, students and Sisters on our website, and check out the organisations supporting our campaign below.

We need you

In the next 12 months, we’re recruiting 20 school partners and 10 corporate partners to make sure this project is built by 2015. So, whatever your creed, nationality or politics, join our #ThinkingGirls movement to create a future-proof, child-friendly, and replicable school that can be a model for sustainable disaster response, and empower a generation of young Haitian women to help their communities towards a brighter tomorrow.
